Swing, Strength And Groovesīeyond these first steps are facilities which can manipulate ‘hard quantized’ material off the grid, but in a controlled and desirable way. Events As Modified By Real Time MIDI Properties’ is enabled in the MIDI Preferences then you’ll see, as well as hear, the quantized results on playback. My preference over Input quantize is using MIDI Real Time Properties, which allows basic Quantize operations to be applied to MIDI on playback, keeping the original performance intact and if ‘Display. Whether or note this is right for you depends on the style of music you produce but if it’s something you feel you need, you can find it in the Event Operations Window. Something you might well choose to enable is Input Quantize, which quantizes MIDI as it’s being played in. And you can quickly change the grid setting from the keyboard using the shortcut Ctrl+Opt+plus/minus on the numeric keyboard (Start+Alt on a PC). You can click the ‘Grid’ button (above Nudge) to show grid lines, which makes visualising what you’re doing easier. My recommendation is to use the Follow Bars/Beats Grid setting in the quantize grid drop down. Adjusting the grid on a case by case basis will get you more accurate results first time and as soon as you encounter a triplet you’ll need to change grid settings anyway! It has to be said that an awful lot of the time 16th notes will give you sensible results but if your performance is out of time enough to need quantizing it’s likely that you’ll get the odd errant note which is so far out of time that it gets quantized to the the wrong place. To answer this properly requires at least a little music theory knowledge of what an 8th note means vs a quarter note etc. The new Quantize cluster offers the bare minimum of controls but with the combination of grid resolution, Strength and Swing you can do a lot, if you need more then click the gear icon button and the Event Operations window will open at the Quantize page for fine control.
